Probable, it is the most ancient pagoda in Vietnam .It was founded since dynasty Ly Nam De (544-548). At that time, the pagoda was set up very closed to the bank of Cai river, it was named: Khai Quoc (opening country). Now Tran Quoc Pagoda is situated on the centre of the west lake. At present, pagoda has 3 main houses: Trai duong, Thieu huong and shrine. In the pagoda there are several fine statue, especially Thich Ca nhap Net ban (Buddha join into nirvana) statue. This is a gilded statue. In the pagoda 14 stelae are extant, the most ancient is a stela, which was established in 1693 by Nguyen Xuan Chinh first-rank doctorate first laureate, on which stated the time of renovated pagoda. In the yard a luxuriant styrax is extant, that was a gift of a Indian president when he visited pagoda in 1957.
Tran Quoc pagoda situated on the centre of the lake. There are a number of monks’s funerary monuments in the garden. In 1842, King Thieu Tri of Nguyen dynasty moved to there and pagoda renamed Tran Bac pagoda, but the people are still acquainted to the previous name.
