In the Lê dynastic time, this was the site of a Guest house for Ambassador’s coming from Lào, Chiêm Thành (Cambodia)… There was a small pagoda close by for of Ambassadors coming from Buddhist countries to worship. So it was named Quán Sứ (Ambassadors).
The writing engraved on stele setup in 1855 by Doctor Lê Duy Trung shows that: In early Gia Long period (1802 - 1819), Quán Sứ Pagoda was situated near Hậu Quân post. In 1822, it was rebuilt for abovesaid post’s forces to worship. When the forces withdrew, it was handed back to local people to cast bell and renew statues. In addition to the cult of Buddha, State monk of the Lý dynasty Nguyễn Minh Không was also worshipped.
In 1934, the pagoda was chosen to be the headquarters of Buddhist General Association of Tonkin and reconstructed as present. Designers were Architect Nguyễn Ngọc Ngoạn and Nguyễn Xuân Tùng.
In has a big scale. The three-door gate was built in style of three doors with a bell pavilion. Behind three door gate, there is a big brick-paving yard. At the middle of yard, a high, square main building with encircling corridors was constructed. At two sides and rear, there is housing range for library, lecturing room, guest’s room, and monk’s bedroom.
Now, Quán Sứ pagoda is the head office of Buddhist Association of Vietnam and Research Institute of Buddhism.
