The city of Hue situated in the South Vietnam, was the site of one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War. Hue was the home to Buddhist protest against the South Vietnamese government in the early 1960s # and the site of several violent protests and crackdowns. The War Zone, Hue now has become a must see sight for tourists from all around the globe.

Delving into the war history of this Vietnamese city the defeat of more than 10,000 entrenched enemy troops by U.S. Marine battalions, consisting of fewer than 2,500 soldiers must be focused.

Situated in central Vietnam, Hue-a unique blend of French and Vietnamese influence was the country's cultural capital. The Imperial City gracefully preserved the magnificence of Vietnam's past while its universities educated Vietnam's brightest minds for the future.

There was a time when Hue became a symbol of everything the Vietnamese people admired and respected. Primarily for this reason, the city was spared the terrible effects of war-until Tet 1968.

In the time of the lunar New Year holiday of Tet-an extremely important week-long festival celebrated all over Vietnam-the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army launched a massive assault on South Vietnam. They seized the American embassy in Saigon, the city of Hue and its inhabitants of about 140,000 citizens. This Tet Offensive started on January 31, 1968. The Battle of Hue went on four weeks and took a toll of some 142 American lives. In the battle for Hue, U.S. Army 7th and 12th Cavalry Regiments supported marines of the First and Fifth Regiments, fighting alongside the Army of the Republic of Vietnam's 1st Division.

The Marines retook the hospital, the university, the Provincial Headquarters, the Treasury building and finally the citadel. On February 26, 1968, when the city of Hue was declared secure, U.S. forces took the decision to remain another week to ensure the city's safety. However, after the fiercest battle, it was exposed that thousands of people in Hue government officials, teachers, professionals and those with ties to the United States were rounded up and executed by the communists.

Again in 1972, during its so-called Easter Offensive, the North Vietnamese Army commenced a weaponry attack on Hue killing an estimated 20,000 people.
